Valana is a fairly good little hero. You have most likely noted that her attack is fairly weak (weaker than Theria's!) and there is nothing special about her defense, resistance, or hits. You probably also noted her casting ability and her leadership skill. This is why she gets 1 1/2 more stars than Theria.

Valana is a hero meant to lead an army, and she can be exceptionally good at it. Her leadership skill grants all normal troops fighting with her +1 swords (per figure!) for each level of her skill. It also increases the strength of all other attacks (Thrown, breath, gaze), except magical ranged attacks, by an amount equal to half her leadership skill. In addition, her casting ability can be used to cast helpful enchantments on friendly troops, or Confusion and Vertigo on enemy troops. That's the good news.

The bad news is that her leadership skill does not even reach 1 until she achieves the level of Captain, 2 until she is a Lord, and 3 when she is at Demi-God. Also, her casting ability tops out at 45 which is not enough to do a great amount of good. Based on her attack and casting ability, I don't want to keep Valana long enough to make her a Demi-God. I would much rather replace her with a high-level hero or a champion. And that is exactly what I will do.

So how do you maximize Valana's potential without keeping her too long? If you hire her, build her a full army as fast as possible and stack them under her. Next, send Valana and her army out to attack lairs, nodes, neutral cities, or your weaker opponents and start racking up her experience. The goal is to get her to the level of Captain which should not be too hard. For the smarter players who pick the Warlord skill for their wizard, this should not take too long. Once she reaches Captain, her Leadership skill is at 1 giving all normal troops stacked with her +1 swords in battle. From this point on, keep Valana until you run out of slots for better heroes and keep stacking better and more powerful troops under her. Ideally, I like to have Valana with 4 Ultra Elite Paladins & 4 Ultra Elite Magicians stacked under her. This army is potent! If I remember correctly, the paladins wind up with an attack of 9 per figure and the magicians 8!

The ideal way to replace Valana is with a better hero who has Leadership or Super Leadership. Examples would be:

Spyder the Rogue,
Death Stryke the Swordsman,
Sir Harold The Knight, or
Torin the Chosen One.

If you're looking for a cheap way to give your troops a slight boost, I would recommend you give Valana a try.
